- Yes. I agree. It doesn't sound too good...:-)
- Well, we favor the TYIN because it has served us very nicely (both
- reliability as well as sound quality) in the past few years and for
- NO other reason. We were just an end user.

- We ourselves have been searching for a long time for a top notch 28.8
- voice modem, to upgrade from our TYIN.
-
- After trying quit a few Voice modems and Voice S/W combinations in the
- past (including Rockwell /Cirrus and various bundled VoiceMail S/W),
- we were quite frustrated from what we got (especially
- reliability-wise), and were happy to find the TYIN and have been using
- it fever since.
- The utilities we developed for the modem were for in-house use (due to
- the relatively simple functionality of the bundled S/W). We found it
- safer to build on an existing known system than to hope (and wait...)
- for new product releases.
- All along, we monitored new products such as the MWAVE DSP modems and
- PHONE BLASTER hoping to upgrade to 28.8kbps, but user reports haven't
- been very favorable. So we're still stuck with it...
- One of the main drawbacks of the TYIN modems is only 14.4kbps max on
- DATA, but on Voice and FAX they are no under-dogs!
- These modems were also widely used in OEM FAXBACK systems (so we've
- heard) such as the ROBOFAX product.
-
- Well, that's history...Back to the discussion:

-
- The TYIN4000 modem claims a 10:1 compression on incoming messages
- (about 20 minutes per megabyte!) thanks to it's DUAL 32-bit DSP's.
- I've never heard of any modem coming NEAR to that!
- Thanks to the on-board DSP's, the TYIN's place a light load on the PC
- CPU and can be run even on a 286 machine (some user report. We use it
- on a 386SX)!

-
- Maybe 8 bit, but at what SAMPLING RATE? .
- Not all 4 or 8 bit recordings are created equal. Most voice modems
- sample at 4800Hz, not 8KHz as the TYIN's. Anyway, sound quality also
- depends on the digital and analog hardware.
- BTW, I was talking about OUTGOING messages (announcements), which
- sound quite miserable at 4 bits. And how does music recorded on these
- modems sound (I've heard quite a few complaints)?
-
- >And being able to fax at 14.4, move data at 28.8, autodistinguish either

-
- How about auto EVERYTHING (i.e. DATA/FAX/VOICE) which the TYIN
- actually delivers and that we have been using? Do you know of any such
- modem?
-
- >support caller ID,
-
- Only the TYIN4000.
-
- >flash upgrade firmware,
-
- How is the upgrade done? Can it be accomplished by the end user?
- The TYIN's use downloadable firmware into on-board RAM. All you have
- to do is get the firmware file, put it on your disk, and your
- AUTOEXEC.BAT automatically loads it! This concept is now used also by
- the MWAVE DSP modems.
-
- >and use the bundled, full featured software ( Faxworks ) for under $ 300 CDN, makes

-
- The basic TYIN2000 can be had for less than 100$ (including bundled
- S/W) nowadays. That's cheap! The TYIN4000 PRO is more than twice as
- much. BTW, both are soundcards as well (44.1KHz / 16bit though).
-
- I've tried FAXWORKS (different versions) many times. One of the most
- missing features is possibility to import WAV files into mailbox
- announcements. Is it supported in your version?
-

-
- So can the TYIN. If you run a DATA application, it releases the modem
- and resumes when that program is terminated.
-
- >When you

-
- Not this one though...

-
- Nope...

-
- I do hope TOO!
- As said, we were hoping for a GOOD and RELIABLE 28.8 modem to appear
- on the market. Until now, non has actually stood up to it's promises.
- Please note that modern modem s/w can be very nice and full of
- features, but if the WHOLE SYSTEM (modem + S/W) is unreliable, it's
- worthless.
- I don't think the TYIN is or will be the only good modem. I just think
- it's about time other modem vendors catchup to some of it's advanced
- features and ideas.
-
- So,"why is this great modem not popular?" you should ask.
- Simple answer: The manufacturer stopped promoting the product rather
- early in it's life cycle. Our guess is that this advanced DSP modem
- (the advanced TYIN4000 Pro even has TWO DSP's!) was too expensive to
- manufacture and compete with cheap modems on the market. It actually
- came before it's time: Look at the popularity of the IBM MWAVE DSP
- modems today. The TYIN was amongst the first to offer reliable
- DATA/FAX/VOICE autodetect, as well as advanced H/W compression (up to
- 20 minutes of voice per megabyte!). From what we've heard, the TYIN
- technology is still embedded in many FAX's and Digital answering
- machines today.
-
- Whew! That was a long and challenging response. I really enjoy this
- thread. Anybody else care to to join and share good experience with
- voice modems?
-
